Columbus PoliceSWAT Officer Enoch "Skip" WhiteOfficer of the Week for April 22, 2007Columbus Police SWAT Officer Enoch "Skip" White On April 2, 2007, Federal Prison inmate Billy Jack Fitzmorris escaped custody and carjacked a motorist in Youngstown, Ohio at gunpoint. He then forced the victim to drive him to Columbus. Once in Columbus, the escapee robbed two area banks. The carjacked victim was able to flee his captor outside one of the banks and called police. The stolen vehicle description was aired, and Officer White, through effective policing, spotted it. As Patrol Officers converged, the armed escapee fled leading several agencies in a lengthy pursuit. Fitzmorris crashed the stolen vehicle and ran into a Hilliard business. Officer White quickly learned from an occupant who was able to flee the business that there was still a hostage inside. Fearing the hostage was in danger, Officer White, using his extensive knowledge and skills, formed a rescue team or "QUAD" and assumed the point position. Once inside, the Officers confirmed the victim was okay, and Officer White immediately established contact with the escapee. Officer White was able to calm the situation and occupy the suspect until additional SWAT team negotiators arrived on scene. It was the quick thinking, courage and tactical skill of Officer Enoch "Skip" White that brought this dangerous evolving situation to its peaceful conclusion. We are pleased to name Officer Enoch "Skip" White our "Officer of the Week" Officer of the Week Archive | |||||||
