Officer Ryan Chrysler

Officer of the Month for February 2009

On December 20 at approximately 9:10pm Columbus Division of Police officers Ryan Chrysler and Shea McCracken were working a marked patrol cruiser together on the cities north side. They were in the area of Hudson Ave when a caller to 911 reported a male near a carryout parking lot firing a gun at people. They observed 3 subjects walking away from the location. While exiting the cruiser to approach the suspects on foot one of the subjects turned very rapidly towards the driver side of the cruiser and approached Officer Chrysler. That suspect fired a handgun at very close range striking Ryan in the chin. The round struck his chin and then exited his cheek missing any vital organs. Ryan and Shea both at that point engaged the suspect firing their division issued sidearms. After an exchange of gunfire the suspect was shot and killed. Ryan was transported to OSU Main Hospital where he was treated for a single gunshot wound to his face. We take this opportunity to recognize his efforts in remaining focused after being shot in the line of duty and having a “survive at all cost” mentality. It is an honor to know he is making our streets safer here in Columbus on a nightly basis. Because of his heroic actions, Officer Chrysler has been named both FOPA and Crimestoppers Officer of the Month.
