Gahanna Police Officers Joe Estep and Dean BlamerOfficer of the Week for May 6, 2007Gahanna Officers Joe Estep and Dean Blamer On the morning of 04-18-2007, Officer Joe Estep received a phone call from an administrator at Gahanna Lincoln High School. He stated a student at Gahanna Lincoln High School had left his mother a suicide note and now could not be located. He was not believed to be at the school. Officer Estep along with Officer Dean Blamer responded to the call and arrived at the office around 9:42 A.M. Officer Blamer entered first and immediately encountered the suicidal student. He ordered the student to "Drop the knife" The student did not comply. As Officer Blamer continued his orders. Officer Estep then entered the office and pulled his taser. He observed the student standing holding a large knife with a silver colored blade, in his right hand, with the blade pointed out. The student was yelling "stay away from me, stay away from me". Officer Blamer, along with some of the staff were all repeatedly telling him to drop the knife. As back-up officers were summoned, Officer Blamer then tapped Officer Estep on the left wrist and he immediately deployed the Taser at this suicidal, knife-wielding student. The Taser had the desired effect, and the student was safely subdued and handcuffed. Officer Estep then searched the student and discovered a large bulge on the student's left calf. Upon further inspection, Officer Estep recovered two knives. The knives were taped together by the handles with the blades out, strapped to his calf with an ace bandage. Additional officers arrived on the scene as a precautionary lock down of the high school was announced. The student was apprehended without injuries to himself or to the other students and staff. Due to the quick actions of these officers using their expertise and training; a potential tragedy was avoided. That is why we commend these officers and are proud to name Gahanna Police Officers Dean Blamer and Joe Estep our "Officers of the Week" Officer of the Week Archive | |||||||
