Prior to 1957, an elected town marshal was the only form of law enforcement. In 1957, "Hilliard’s", as it was called then, had its first volunteer police force and in that same year purchased its first cruiser. In the 1960s, the city officially shortened the name to Hilliard. Due to the tremendous growth in the 1980s doubling the population to over 20,000 residents, the force increased to 43 sworn officers and 18 civilian employees. To date, the Hilliard Police Department also has an Auxiliary Police staff and sponsors a law enforcement Explorer Post.
